Camp Information

Location
The Sun Belt Umpires' Camp takes place at the stadium home of the AAA International League Charlotte Knight's in Charlotte, NC.

Housing
Camp participants requiring accommodations are housed at the Comfort Suites in Charlotte, NC.

Room Arrangements
Each student will be assigned to a double room with another umpire. Roommate preference will be given upon request.

Food
There are numerous restaurants within walking distance of the hotel.

Condition
Each student should report to camp in good physical condition. We will emphasize hustle and aggressiveness.

Equipment
Students should bring complete umpire gear for working plate and bases: mask, shin guards, chest protector, hard toed shoes will be needed.

Applicants
Camp enrollment will be limited to 56 students. Students should send in application early to secure camp placement.

Sun Belt Camp Staff

Steve Spano - Camp Director: Steve's first season in professional baseball was 1981. He currently works as an alternate umpire in the International League.

Ron Staib - Assistant Camp Director: Chief evaluator of new college umpires for the Metro-New York area. Ron is one of the NCAA's premier umpires.

Sun Belt Camp Instructors

Jerry Layne - Chief Instructor: Joined the National League in 1989. Jerry has worked two NLC Series and one All-Star game. Jerry also teaches for the Harry Wendelstedt School for Umpires.

Vic Voltaggio joined the American League in 1977. Vic has worked five ALC Series, two All-Star Games and one World Series. Retired from the American League in 1996.

Instructor Assistants working at previous camps have included:

Mitch Kiker is a 1984 graduate of the Harry Wendelstedt School for Umpires. Mitch umpired seven seasons in professional baseball.

Chris Boberg is a 1991 graduate of the Major League Umpire Development Program. Chris worked last year in the Southern League.

Adonis Hill is a 1996 graduate of the Major League Umpire Development Program. Adonis worked last year in the Carolina League.

Steve Willard is a 1991 graduate of the Joe Brinkman Umpires School. Steve is currently working as an alternate umpire in the International League.

Camp Format
Friday (Day One)
12:00-2:00 PM Registration
3:00-9:00 PM Field Instruction and Rules Sessions

Saturday (Day Two)
9:30 AM-9:00 PM Field Instruction and Rules Sessions

Sunday (Day Three)
9:30 AM-5:00 PM Field Instruction and Rules Sessions

Students who demonstrate an acceptable level of competency may be assigned to umpire local area college games. Instructors will observe and evaluate these students.
