The Eastern Ontario Umpires Association believes ongoing evaluation of our performance and knowledge to be an essential part of our members' development. Each umpire has something to learn, to improve, to work towards as we strive to reach to our maximum potential as officials,
Within the EOUA evaluation is not used as a tool for promotion, ranking or for recommending officials to any league or organization. To the contrary: all evaluations are confidential to the umpire who has requested evaluation, and no record or file of this process is kept. If, at the request of an umpire or crew, an EOUA Evaluator attends a game for this purpose, then the results from our evaluation form are discussed with the umpire(s) in a post-game meeting, and all copies of the forms are left with the crew for their reference and future use.
Evaluation can be a formal or an informal process:
- We encourage each umpire to keep a personal diary of their games, assessing the points they felt they did well and those areas they should try to improve on in the future.
- We encourage crews to take part in a post-game analysis of their work; noting what went well, what deficiencies in their crew were noted, and possible solutions should the situation arise again.
- We encourage informal evaluations in which a fellow association member simply watches a game and meets with the crew, or an individual umpire afterwards.
- We encourage umpires to invite the EOUA's evaluators to attend their game and use the more formal evaluation forms the Association has developed. These forms look at all aspects of the umpire's performance and coverage, providing insight into many aspects which will benefit the individual, crew and ultimately all who take part in the game.
We also wish to stress that evaluation is a personal process, and that no EOUA umpire should be, or is, evaluated unless they have specifically asked for assistance. The EOUA wants its members to feel comfortable with making each game an opportunity to improve their skills, and not simply a "one-time focus" because an evaluation is taking place. Baseball is a game that requires judgment. We believe that mechanics and field coverage techniques assist the umpire by getting them into the optimal position to make the correct call. Our evaluation does not question an umpire's judgment, but assists each of us in developing and refining the tools to make those decisions.
Our evaluation forms are available for your use. There are two very comprehensive forms for the: Plate Umpire and the Base Umpire. There is a simplified evaluation form for use with rookie or younger umpires, or as a discussion point for information evaluation.
Ongoing, honest evaluation is a tool that benefits each EOUA member, from our introductory umpires, to our seasoned veterans. We must strive to control the things we can, not the things we can't. As we take steps to being a better official, the EOUA's evaluation system endeavours to make each step a positive one.
