![]() Members of the Eastern Ontario Umpires Association work across many leagues, at all age levels, in both baseball and softball. Each league imposes, recommends or suggests a dress code for its umpires. Some leagues permit umpires to choose their own clothing, provided that it meets professional dress codes for umpires. The following are recommendations made for members of the EOUA: Shirts, Pants and Crests: Members of the EOUA normally wear the navy blue pullover umpire shirts and traditional gray pants. The playing number of the umpire should be on the right sleeve of the shirt. Because many leagues have specific cresting requirements, displaying an EOUA crest on the shirt or ball bag is preferred but optional. Members who wear the light blue, red, or other colored shirts and pants may do so, with consideration to the crew notes made below. Shirts and coats should not be crested with the crests of several associations. A velcro or double-sided tape system will permit the umpire to switch crests as they work different leagues. Hats: The fitted professional umpire hat is preferred to models which are adjustable. The hat should not be crested, unless a league hat is required to be worn. If the umpire is wearing a hat with a league crest, that crest must be from the particular league or of the Association. Members working the plate are requested to wear a brimmed hat (the combo style). Two Umpire Crews: When two umpires work together the EOUA encourages both umpires to dress as close to alike as possible: including shirt style, color and pants. Crews should arrive at the diamond prepared to wear a navy blue uniform unless previous color arrangements have been made. Three to Six Umpire Crews: When three or more umpires work a game, it is recommended that the base umpires wear matching clothing. The plate umpire is given the option of selecting a color which does not have to match with the other umpires on the crew. The color of the pants and hats should be consistent across the crew. Crews should arrive at the diamond prepared to wear a navy blue uniform unless previous color arrangements have been made. Coats or Jackets: Members are strongly encouraged to dress in professional umpiring jackets or sweaters when weather is a concern. On crews with three or more umpires, either all the base umpires should wear a jacket, or they all should not. If the weather changes the crew should adjust their clothing at the same time. The plate umpire is free dress in any manner which assists their personal comfort and performance. Other Requirements: Members of the EOUA are to dress in the accordance with the best practice of professional umpires. Since a large portion of our mandate is to provide an example for young umpires entering officiating our members should strive at all times to ensure that they meet a professional dress code, including black socks, black shoes (shined) and proper umpiring hats. Ball Bags, Indicators and Jewelry: Only the plate umpire will wear a ball bag. The plate umpire must also carry and use an indicator. Indicators are optional for other umpires on the field. It is recommended that umpires working diamonds with fixed bases carry a brush in their back pocket to assist with cleaning the bases when necessary. Umpires should refrain from wearing jewelry which would be visible or cause reflections. The plate umpire, in particular, should not be wearing a wrist watch, bracelets, or multiple rings. The base umpire should be carrying a stopwatch in their pocket and should note the start time of each game. Safety: Dressing for protection and safety is our highest concern. This not only protects our officials, but sets a proper example for the leagues and younger umpires within those leagues. An umpire who cannot equip themselves to an adequate level of protection for a game should simply not work that game.
